 India’s regional supremacy went unchallenged as the hosts were crowned overall champions for the 12th consecutive time after notching up a record-breaking haul of 308 medals, dominating the final day of competitions as well in the South Asian Games in Shillong on Tuesday.

With women boxers scooping all the three gold medals on offer and the judokas also bagging two gold and two silver on the last day of the Games, India’s final tally came to 188 gold, 99 silver and 30 bronze medals.

It was a massive jump in medal count for the Indians, who had won 175, including 90 gold, in the previous edition of the Games in 2010.

At the distant second spot were Sri Lanka with a haul of 186 medals (25 silver, 63 silver and 98 bronze). Pakistan held on to the third spot with a final count of 106 medals (12 gold, 37 silver and 57 bronze).

 On the final day of competitions, action was restricted to this hill town where women boxers and judokas fought their summit bouts.

First off the blocks were pugilists, who ensured that India scored a ‘Perfect 10’ in boxing. After the men had scooped all the seven gold medals on offer on Monday, the women made a clean sweep on Tuesday.

London Olympics bronze-medallist M C Mary Kom (51kg), former world champion L Sarita Devi (60kg) and Asian Games bronze winner Pooja Rani (75kg) picked up the top honours in their respective categories.

On a comeback trail after recovering from a shoulder injury, Mary Kom packed a powerful punch against her seasoned Sri Lankan rival Anusha Kodituwakku Dilrukshi to be adjudged winner via Technical Knockout (TKO) in a bout lasting less than 90 seconds.

With Mary landing some powerful blows, Anusha lost her balance and injured her right knee. This forced her to take a medical break before attempting a comeback.

However, a booming jab from the five-time world champion sent her almost out of the ring before the referee intervened. The injury to Anusha will take about two-three months to heal.

However, Sarita, who was returning to competitive action after serving a one-year ban for her infamous Asian Games meltdown, had to stave off a stiff challenge from another Lankan opponent in M Vidushika Prabadhi.

The only scare India endured was when Sarita Devi, returning to competitive ring after her one-year ban following the infamous Asian Games meltdown, faced a stiff challenge from another Lankan opponent in M Vidushika Prabadhi.

The Incheon bronze-medallist overwhelmed the Lankan in the first two rounds but her opponent came back strongly in the third with some powerful blows leading to Sarita falling twice before the Indian won by a narrow 39-36 margin to be adjudged unanimous winner 3-0.

However, Pooja ended the campaign in style when she overwhelmed Nilanthi Andaraweer by a TKO in a bout lasting only one round.

The judokas too showed good form, bagging two gold and two silver medals to finish on top at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor sports hall here.

Four events were held on the last day of the judo competition and the Indians put up a dominating show once again to finish on a high.

Avatar Singh took just 49 seconds from the stipulated five minutes to prevail over his Afghan opponent Mohammad Ismail Kakar en route to the gold medal in the men’s under 90kg.

Pooja, on the other hand, overcame a strong challenge from Beenish Khan of Pakistan in an evenly-contested duel before the Indian sealed off the issue in 3:03 minutes from the stipulated four in women’s U-70kg.

Women’s U-78kg was tricky as there were only four contestants and Aruna (200 points) was edged out by gold medallist Fouzia Mumtaz (210) of Pakistan in the round-robin league.

It was the fifth battle of the day between the two rivals, and Mumtaz clinched the issue in just four minutes.

Pitted against Shah Hussain Shah in the men’s U-100kg final, Shubham Kumar simply lost against the celebrated Pakistani, who won in just one minute and 29 seconds to clinch the gold.

Indian judokas emerged overall winners with nine gold, three silver from 12 disciplines to push Pakistan (2-2-8) and Nepal (1-2-6) to second and third places, respectively.

Siachen soldier loses battle, Pak. ready to mull drawdown

 

He continued to be on ventilator support since his admission in the hospital on Tuesday due to continued multi-organ dysfunction. 

Lance Naik Hanamanthappa Koppad, whose miraculous survival days after an avalanche hit an Army camp on the Siachen Glacier transfixed the nation, died on Thursday morning, bringing the focus back on the challenges of military deployment on the glacier, with Pakistan indicating that it is willing to consider early de-militarisation. The soldier of 19 Madras Regiment is survived by his wife and daughter.

“Really sorry to inform everyone that LNk Hanamanthappa is no more. He breathed his last breath at 11.45 a.m. today,” an Army officer announced, bringing down the curtain on one of the most dramatic stories of grit and determination in recent memory.

Hanamanthappa was rescued alive on Monday night, having been buried under 35 feet of snow, along with nine other soldiers, by the February 3 avalanche. He was flown to Delhi on Tuesday in an IAF aircraft and was admitted to R&R Hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in bidding farewell to Hanumanthappa. After laying a wreath on his mortal remains, he tweeted: “He leaves us sad & devastated. RIP Lance Naik Hanamanthappa. The soldier in you remains immortal. Proud that martyrs like you served India.”

The bodies of nine other soldiers who were killed in the disaster have been recovered but are yet to be brought down from the glacier because of bad weather, Army officers said.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a member of the Flaviviridae virus family and the Flavivirus genus.

In humans, it initially causes a mild illness known as Zika fever, Zika, or Zika disease, which since the 1950s has been known to occur within a narrow equatorial belt from Africa to Asia. In 2014, the virus spread eastward across the Pacific Ocean to French Polynesia, then to Easter Island and in 2015 to Central America, the Caribbean, and South America, where the Zika outbreak has reached pandemic levels. Zika virus is related to dengue, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, and West Nile viruses. The illness it causes is similar to a mild form of dengue fever, is treated by rest, and cannot yet be prevented by drugs or vaccines. There is a possible link between Zika fever and microcephaly in newborn babies by mother-to-child transmission, as well as a stronger one with neurologic conditions in infected adults, including cases of the Guillain–Barré syndrome.

In January 2016, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued travel guidance on affected countries, including the use of enhanced precautions, and guidelines for pregnant women including considering postponing travel. Other governments or health agencies soon issued similar travel warnings,while Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, and Jamaica advised women to postpone getting pregnant until more is known about the risks.

Virology

Along with other viruses in this family, Zika virus is enveloped and icosahedral with a nonsegmented, single-stranded, positive-sense RNA genome. It is most closely related to the Spondweni virus and is one of the two viruses in the Spondweni virus clade.

The virus was first isolated in April 1947 from a rhesus macaque monkey that had been placed in a cage in the Zika Forest of Uganda, near Lake Victoria, by the scientists of the Yellow Fever Research Institute. A second isolation from the mosquito A. africanus followed at the same site in January 1948. When the monkey developed a fever, researchers isolated from its serum a transmissible agent that was first described as Zika virus in 1952. In 1968, it was isolated for the first time from humans in Nigeria.From 1951 through 1981, evidence of human infection was reported from other African countries such as the Central African Republic, Egypt, Gabon, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Uganda, as well as in parts of Asia including India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The pathogenesis of the virus is hypothesized to start with an infection of dendritic cells near the site of inoculation, followed by a spread to lymph nodes and the bloodstream. Flaviviruses generally replicate in the cytoplasm, but Zika virus antigens have been found in infected cell nuclei.

There are two lineages of Zika virus, the African lineage and the Asian lineage. Phylogenetic studies indicate that the virus spreading in the Americas is most closely related to French Polynesian strains. Complete genome sequences of Zika viruses have been published. Recent preliminary findings from sequences in the public domain uncovered a possible change in nonstructural protein 1 codon usage that may increase the viral replication rate in humans.

Transmission

 

Zika virus is transmitted by daytime-active mosquitoes and has been isolated from a number of species in the genus Aedes, such as A. aegypti, and arboreal mosquitoes such as A. africanus, A. apicoargenteus, A. furcifer, A. hensilli, A. luteocephalus, and A. vitattus. Studies show that the extrinsic incubation period in mosquitoes is about 10 days.Zika virus can migrate between humans through sexual contact and it can also cross the placenta, affecting an unborn fetus. A mother already infected with Zika virus near the time of delivery can pass on the virus to her newborn around the time of birth, but this is rare.

The vertebrate hosts of the virus are primarily monkeys and humans. Before the current pandemic, which began in 2007, Zika virus "rarely caused recognized 'spillover' infections in humans, even in highly enzootic areas".

The potential societal risk of Zika virus can be delimited by the distribution of the mosquito species that transmit it (its vectors). The global distribution of the most cited carrier of Zika virus, A. aegypti, is expanding due to global trade and travel. A. aegypti distribution is now the most extensive ever recorded – across all continents including North America and even the European periphery. Some mosquitoes have been found to have survived the last four winters in Washington D. C.

Recent news reports have drawn attention to the spread of Zika in Latin America and the Caribbean.The countries and territories that have been identified by the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) as having experienced "local Zika virus transmission" are Barbados, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Saint Martin, Suriname, and Venezuela.

In 2009, Brian Foy, a biologist from the Colorado State University, sexually transmitted Zika virus to his wife. He visited Senegal to study mosquitoes and was bitten on a number of occasions. A few days after returning to the United States, he fell ill with Zika, but not before having had unprotected intercourse with his wife. She subsequently showed symptoms of Zika infection with extreme sensitivity to light. Foy is the first person known to have passed on an insect-borne virus to another human by sexual contact.

In 2015, Zika virus RNA was detected in the amniotic fluid of two fetuses, indicating that it had crossed the placenta and could cause a mother-to-child infection. On 20 January 2016, scientists from the state of Paraná, Brazil, detected genetic material of Zika virus in the placenta of a woman who had undergone an abortion due to the fetus's microcephaly, which confirmed that the virus is able to pass the placenta.

Vaccine development

Effective vaccines exist for several Flaviviruses. Vaccines for yellow fever virus, Japanese encephalitis, and tick-borne encephalitis were introduced in the 1930s, while the vaccine for dengue fever has just recently become available for use.

Work has begun towards developing a vaccine for Zika virus, according to Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The researchers at the Vaccine Research Center have extensive experience from working with vaccines for other viruses such as West Nile virus, chikungunya virus, and dengue fever. Nikos Vasilakis of the Center for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases has predicted that 10 to 12 years may be needed before an effective Zika virus vaccine is available.

Clinical 

Common symptoms of infection with the virus include mild headaches, maculopapular rash, fever, malaise, conjunctivitis, and joint pains. The first well-documented case of Zika virus was described in 1964; it began with a mild headache, and progressed to a maculopapular rash, fever, and back pain. Within two days, the rash started fading, and within three days, the fever resolved and only the rash remained. Thus far, Zika fever has been a relatively mild disease of limited scope, with only one in five persons developing symptoms, with no fatalities, but its true potential as a viral agent of disease is unknown.

As of 2016, no vaccine or preventative drug is available. Symptoms can be treated with paracetamol (acetaminophen), while aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should be used only when dengue has been ruled out to reduce the risk of bleeding.

Neurological complications

In a French Polynesian epidemic, 73 cases of Guillain–Barré syndrome and other neurologic conditions occurred in a population of 270,000, which may be complications of Zika virus.

In December 2015, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control issued a comprehensive update on the possible association of Zika virus with congenital microcephaly and this syndrome. Data suggests that newborn babies of mothers who had a Zika virus infection during the first trimester of pregnancy are at an increased risk of microcephaly. In December 2015 it was suspected that a transplacental infection of the fetus may lead to microcephaly and brain damage. The Brazilian Ministry of Health has since confirmed the relation between the Zika virus and microcephaly.

FIFA commissioned US Attorney General Michael Garcia to inquire about the bidding processes through which Russia and Qatar got the next two editions of the FIFA World Cup in 2018 and 2022 respectively. Garcia submitted his report and then a copy of it was shared with the Attorney General of Switzerland, who later opined that there were "grounds for suspicion that, in isolated cases, international transfers of assets with connections to Switzerland took place which merit examination by the criminal prosecution authorities." Sepp Blatter was at the helm of FIFA from 1998 to 2015.
The Swiss authorities launched a separate inquiry on Blatter based on "suspicion of criminal mismanagement and of money laundering" concerning the 2018 and 2022 bidding processes, with Blatter and Michel Platini copping suspensions.
Nick Kyrgios vs Wawrinka: Kyrgios was playing against two-time Grand Slam champion Stanislas Wawrinka in Montreal and the former passed a lewd comment about the latter's girlfriend. Kyrgios went on to say that his friend Thanasi Kokkinakis slept with Wawrinka's girlfriend. Wawrinka could not hear that comment until the end of the match. Wawrinka expressed his disappointment with a series of tweets. Kyrgios was later found guilty and was fined $10,000. Later Kyrgios also apologised to Wawrinka.
 
21 Indian weightlifters suspended: The Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) banned 21 weightlifters after they tested positive for banned substances. Among these 21 wightlifters, Suneeta Rani, who won a gold medal in the 2006 Commonwealth games in Melbourne, was also present. It was termed as one of the biggest doping scandals of recent years.
Greek Football Scandal: Olympiakos owner Evangelos Marinakis, Greece Football Federation Members Theodoros Kouridis and Georgios Sarris were involved in running a criminal body since 2011. National Intelligence Service of Greece and prosecutor Aristidis Korreas revealed that their aim behind this was to take total control of Greek football by blackmailing and fraud. Court Council is yet to announce their verdict as all the alleged people are still being questioned by the judge.
The Deflategate Scandal: New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts played a match in the AFC Championship, where the former defeated the latter in 2014. It was reported later by USA Today that the footballs being used for the NFL playoff game were deflated a little, to give quarterback Tom Brady and the New England Patriots an advantage. Brady was later suspended for four games and he paid a hefty fine of $1 million, while the Patriots lost a couple of draft picks
